Portrait of a Greyhound with a Pup against a Landscape Background

Oil on canvas.

Dimensions : 66 1/8 x 99 ¼ in.

Our brown greyhound is depicted before a twilit landscape and is in no way distracted by the small pup peering at him timidly out of its niche-like space in the lower right corner.  The artist seems to have specialised in these open-air animal portraits, a concept that also holds true for his still lifes, and which allowed him to record the shifting contrasts of light, according to the time of day.  Here, the sun’s setting rays neatly define the contours of the dog’s paws and illuminate his chest and head. The painter’s stylistic characteristics are expressed through his generous and vibrant palette, which is fully apparent in the patches of highlight on the ground and on the tree trunk on the left.
