This important and rare patinated bronze medallion in high relief represents the head of Medusa. The wavy hair is adorned with snakes. The mouth is open in the manner of the bocca della verità.

In 1787 François Daujon executed two medallions with Medusa heads identical to ours. They are intended for the decoration of the Fontaine des Innocents  in Paris in 1787. They are then attributed to the Louvre by decision of December 7, 1821 where they are today.
