This set of eight painted gouaches is a rare iconographic testament to the military organization and royal aesthetics of the Ancien Régime. Each composition depicts a "trophy of war"—a visual allegory composed of assembled military elements—dedicated to one of the regiments of the Maison du Roi, an elite corps comprising the heavy cavalry of the French monarchy.

These regiments, founded between the mid-seventeenth century and the end of Louis XIV’s reign, embodied the values of loyalty, honor, and service associated with the noble class. The eight regiments depicted are: the Gendarmes Écossais, Bourguignons, de Flandre, d’Anjou, de la Reine, de Berry, du Dauphin, and d’Orléans. Each is identified by its banners, insignia, and sometimes the emblems of its commanding officers, meticulously rendered on the flags and shields.
