This Louis XIV period chest, with its domed top, is entirely inlaid on all sides with green-tinted brass, pewter and horn on a tortoiseshell background, and is decorated with rinceaux enriched with grotesque masks and ram heads. Fitted with a small, finely chased and gilded bronze key, the box reveals an interior entirely veneered in precious woods.

The decor is more or less freely inspired by the designs of certain ornamentalists who were working to renew the decorative arts during the reign of Louis XIV. These included Gabriel Huquier (1695-1772), Claude III Audran and Jean Bérain (1638-1711), whose models were one of the main sources of inspiration for craftsmen of the period.
